I've leveled more characters than I care to admit, on official servers and on private ones, so this is the route I actually use, not theory.
Maps per level range
Exact spawns differ per server, but the classic progression that Gameforge's own level guide describes still holds on most setups:
- 1 to 30: Map1 and Map2 of your kingdom. Do the intro quests, take the free starter gear, and kill wild dogs, wolves, then the tiger and bear areas. Don't overstay here. The moment mobs die in one or two hits and the XP bar crawls, move on.
- 30 to 55: Orc Valley. This is the first real grind map and also where your level 30 biologist quest items (Orc Teeth) drop, so you're leveling and collecting at the same time.
- 35 to 75: Spider Dungeon. Floor by floor as you grow. Poison hurts, so bring antidotes or enough HP regen. This is also the range where skill level and gear start mattering more than raw time spent.
- 75 to 95: Grotto of Exile, especially the second part. Gameforge's guide points at Cavern of Exile 2 for exactly this range. You'll want decent resistances here; going in undergeared is one of the biggest time sinks in the whole game.
- 95 to 120: Enchanted Forest and the other endgame zones your server offers. From here on, XP per hour is decided almost entirely by your bonuses (average damage, EXP rings, event boosts), not by which corner of the map you stand in.
Metin farming, the backbone of leveling
Metin stones are the most efficient XP and loot source once the intro quests dry up. Two rules matter:
- The 9-level rule. According to the official metinstone guide, you should be at most 9 levels above a metin's level, otherwise the chance for rare drops falls off hard. So don't farm level 40 metins at level 60 and wonder where the soul stones went.
- Drop tables scale with metin level. Low metins from level 5 give skill books, from around level 25 spirit stones join the pool, and from level 40 upward soul stones can drop. Higher metins are worth the extra effort.
Missions and quests: which ones actually pay
Not every quest is worth your time. The main story missions and the level-up quests generally are, because they hand out XP, gear, and consumables that match your level exactly. The 1 to 30 stretch in particular is fastest when you chain the introductory quests instead of pure grinding; Gameforge says the same in their 1 to 30 route. Fetch quests that send you across three maps for a reward you'll outgrow in an hour? Skip them.
Biologist quests: do not sleep on these
This is the part newer players ignore and veterans obsess over, with good reason. The rewards are permanent character bonuses. Per the Metin2 Wiki, the chain looks like this:
- Level 30: 10x Orc Tooth, reward +10% movement speed
- Level 40: 15x Curse Book, reward +5% attack speed
- Level 50: 15x Demon's Keepsake, reward +60 defence
- Level 60: 20x Ice Marble, reward +50 attack value
- Level 70: 25x Zelkova Branch, reward +10% movement speed and +10% damage reduction
- Level 80: 30x Tugyi's Tablet, reward +6% attack speed and +10% attack value
- Level 85: 40x Red Ghost Tree Branch, reward 10% PvP damage reduction
- Level 90: 50x Leaders' Notes, reward +8% damage against players
The classic time wasters
- Overstaying in low maps. Once you're far above the mobs, XP drops massively and can effectively round to zero. Comfortable is not the same as efficient.
- Farming metins way above the 9-level window. Fast breaks, garbage drops.
- Forgetting the daily biologist hand-in. The single most expensive mistake per second of effort in the game.
- Grinding without any EXP bonus. Rings, events, group bonuses. If your server has them and you grind raw anyway, you're donating hours.
- Undergeared dungeon attempts. Dying and running back eats more time than farming the missing gear first.
On current official servers, 120 is the regular level cap. Progression then continues through Champion Levels on Yohara, which is its own topic and deserves its own thread.
Frequently asked questions
What is the fastest way to level in Metin2?
Chain the intro quests to about 30, then combine metin farming with mobs near your level in the map progression above. Stack every EXP bonus your server offers.
How far above a metin stone can my level be?
At most 9 levels if you care about rare drops like skill books and soul stones. You can still break higher-gap metins for pure XP, but the loot suffers.
When should I start the biologist quests?
At level 30, the moment you can. Since only one item per day can be handed in, starting late costs you weeks of permanent bonuses you could already have.
Do these maps apply to private servers too?
The level ranges and mechanics mostly do, but rates and custom maps change the math. Use the same principle: mobs near your level, metins in your window, biologist items daily.
That's my route. If your server has a better spot for a specific bracket, or you've timed metin routes and have numbers, post them below. Questions about a specific level range are welcome too, I'll answer what I can.
