Metin2 elemental resistance: which bonus to wear where, and why +50 is not 50 percent
Most monsters in Metin2 hit with an element, and every element has a resistance bonus that cuts that damage. The system looks simple until you try to build for it, because the bonuses come from four different places, the number printed on the item is not the number you get, and two reputable sources describe the reduction differently.
The six elements
Wind, lightning, fire, darkness, ice and earth. A monster's element shows as a symbol in the info panel when you select it. Bosses are the exception to watch, since some carry a different element from the rest of their family, and zodiac monsters belong to more than one group.
Where each resistance comes from
Which resistance to wear where
How much the resistance actually cuts
This is where the sources part ways.
The Gameforge wiki calls elemental resistance a type I bonus, which means it reduces part of the attacker's attack value before your defense is subtracted. Its worked example uses a Demon Archer with 500 attack against a character with 400 defense, where 80 percent of the damage is darkness. With 20 arrow defense the hit lands for 80. With 20 darkness resistance instead, the same hit lands for 20. The wiki's conclusion is that pieces carrying elemental resistance are very effective compared with type II bonuses such as Blessing and Arrow Defense.
Community measurement puts the effect lower. Metin2Atlas states that the combat code multiplies the resistance figure by 0.3 before applying it, so fire resistance +50 cuts a hit by 15 percent rather than 50, and it prints the ladder: +10 cuts 3 percent, +20 cuts 6, +30 cuts 9, +40 cuts 12, +50 cuts 15 and +60 cuts 18. The same page says that scaling runs only in the monster to player direction.
Both sources agree on one point. Elemental resistance does nothing in PvP. Class resistance is what applies there, and per the community measurement it applies in full.
Practical rules
1. Pick the resistance by the map you farm, not by the element you assume is strongest.
2. Do not pay three times the price for a resistance roll on the assumption that the printed number is the reduction.
3. Use talismans when you need darkness, ice or earth. Those three cannot roll on a bracelet, a helmet or a piece of armor.
4. Keep element gear out of your PvP set. It does nothing there.
5. On a private server, ask whether the element system is active and whether the scaling is in place. Both are common settings to change.
FAQ
Can fire resistance roll on a talisman?
No. Talismans roll darkness, ice and earth, while fire, wind and lightning are the ones that roll on bracelets, helmets and armor.
Which dragon stone gives ice resistance?
Diamond. Jade is wind, garnet lightning, ruby fire, onyx darkness and sapphire earth.
Does elemental resistance work against players?
No. The wiki and the community measurement site agree that it applies only to monster damage.
Is +50 fire resistance 50 percent less damage?
The wiki's example treats the bonus as applied to the attacker's attack value and calls it highly effective. Community measurement on the official server says the applied value is 30 percent of the printed one, which would make +50 a 15 percent cut. The two do not agree, so treat the printed number as a ceiling rather than the result.
Do bosses always match their family's element?
No. The wiki notes that some bosses carry a different element than the rest of their kind, so check the symbol on the monster itself.

Where each resistance comes from
- Random bonus on bracelets, helmets and armor: wind, lightning and fire only, at +2, +4, +6, +10 or +15 percent.
- Random bonus on talismans: darkness, ice and earth, at +5, +10, +15, +20 or +25 percent. Talismans arrived in game version 17.5, and before that those three resistances came only from alchemy.
- Base bonus on specific low level items: some necklaces and shoes carry an element resistance that grows with the item's upgrade, from +1 percent at +0 to +10 percent at +9.
- Alchemy: every dragon stone type carries one element resistance, between 1 and 16 percent depending on class, clarity and level.
Which resistance to wear where
- Wind: esoterics, frogs, lemures, manticores, En-Tai, Ochao
- Lightning: Setaou, cyclops, amazons, thieves and assassins, giants in Snake Field and the Giants' Land
- Fire: fire monsters
- Darkness: demons, the plagued in the Devil's Catacombs
- Ice: ice monsters, tritons, crustaceans, Hydra monsters
- Earth: trees, amazons, thieves and assassins, ogres, gnolls, giants in the Thunder Mountains
