Metin2 black screen and client freeze: the minimize bug, the engine limit, and what to try first

Quick summary

The black screen in Metin2 is usually not a crash. The client keeps running, the music keeps playing, and the process holds a noticeable share of CPU, but nothing renders. Two explanations get repeated on the official support board and on the private server development forum, and they point at different fixes. One is a rendering backlog that builds up while the client is minimized. The other is that the game engine was written for much older CPUs and does not use newer hardware well. Both are worth knowing before you start changing settings.

The symptom

A player on the official Metin2 board describes the exact shape of the problem. They log in, set up a shop on a second account, and leave it overnight. In the morning the map music is still playing in that window, but the shop has logged out and the window shows only a black screen. It cannot be closed with the X button and it holds around 25 to 30 percent of the CPU.

That is the pattern to look for. If the process is still alive and using CPU, the game has not crashed. It is still working, it just is not drawing.

Cause one: the minimize backlog

A developer on the Metin2 development forum profiled the game and traced the same bug. Their conclusion was that the game does not freeze at all. It keeps updating normally, but the update step eventually takes so long that rendering gets skipped, which looks exactly like a frozen black screen.

The cause is granny controls. When you minimize the client, completed controls are never freed, because the game frees them in CGrannyModelInstance::UpdateWorldPose_, which is called from CPythonApplication::RenderGame_. While the window is minimized, RenderGame is not called, so the controls pile up. GrannySetModelClock then takes longer and longer, and when you restore the window it cannot finish the update in time to render again.

They also give a way to reproduce it: spawn a lot of monsters, minimize the client for 30 to 40 minutes, then maximize it again. It freezes right at that point. Their own server hit it because they run a lot of offline shops.

Cause two: the engine and newer CPUs

A reply on the same official thread says the game engine was written for much older CPUs, that Metin2 cannot use newer CPUs well, and that no update or patch will fix it because the engine will not be rewritten. Another player in that thread reports the same black screen and launcher trouble on a current Ryzen and RTX 3080.

The official response on that thread is shorter: restart the computer, check for any necessary updates, and if that does not help, contact support.

These two readings are not the same explanation, and neither source settles it. Treat the engine argument as one player's explanation, and the minimize argument as the one with a concrete mechanism behind it.

What to try
  • Restart the client, and restart the computer if the window will not close.
  • Check for updates, including the launcher, since the launcher is a separate piece from the game client.
  • Do not leave the client minimized for long stretches. If you need to leave a shop open overnight, expect the black screen and be ready to restart.
  • Close programs you do not need. One reply on the official thread suggests stopping updates and background programs.
  • If nothing changes, contact support, which is the step the official reply points to.
FAQ
  • Is my PC too weak? The official thread has players reporting the same thing on both older and current hardware, so a weak PC is not the only explanation.
  • Is the black screen a crash? Usually not. The process stays alive and keeps using CPU while the screen stays black.
  • Will a patch fix it? The official reply says to restart, check for updates and contact support. The development forum post explains the minimize backlog but does not claim it is fixed.
  • Does it matter if I leave a shop open? The original report is about leaving a shop open overnight, and the developer's server hit it because of offline shops.
  • Can I test the minimize theory? Yes. Spawn many monsters, minimize for 30 to 40 minutes, then restore the window and watch for the freeze.
  • Should I lower my graphics settings? Neither source here names a graphics setting as the cause, so treat that as a guess rather than a fix.
