Quick summary

Catalysts are upgrade-chance items. They were added in version 22.4 and they exist for one job: when an upgrade or craft is not guaranteed to succeed, a catalyst raises the odds. They come in twelve categories and in five star levels, and the higher stars are crafted from the lower ones at a flat 40 percent.

The twelve categories

The wiki's item refinement page lists one catalyst per item family:
  • Belt Catalyst
  • Weapon Catalyst
  • Armour Catalyst
  • Miscellanea Catalyst
  • Accessory Catalyst
  • Skill Book Catalyst
  • Set Weapon Catalyst
  • Set Helmet Catalyst
  • Set Armour Catalyst
  • Glove Catalyst
  • Pet Catalyst
  • Map Catalyst
The refinement tables show where each one applies. A Miscellanea Catalyst covers potions, an Accessory Catalyst covers the Aura Outfit, a Skill Book Catalyst covers books, and a Belt Catalyst covers belts and the Red Flame Stone. Using the wrong category does nothing, so check the table for the item you are working on before you spend one.

The star levels and what they add
  • 1 star: no extra success chance.
  • 2 star: adds 2 percent.
  • 3 star: adds 5 percent.
  • 4 star: adds 10 percent.
  • 5 star: adds 20 percent.
The bonus is a fixed addition, not a multiplier. The wiki spells out the example: an item at 40 percent success with a 4 star catalyst becomes 50 percent, not 44 percent. That distinction matters when you are deciding whether a craft is worth the materials.

Where the 1 star catalysts come from

The 1 star Catalyst page lists seven chests as sources: Balathor's Frost Chest, Balathor's Frost Chest+, DR Lucky Chest, Golden Seer Chest, Green Fortune Chest, Red Fortune Chest and Silver Seer Chest. It also lists the Gaya Market NPC. The page notes that when a box gives you a catalyst, which of the twelve categories you get is random.

Crafting the higher stars

All four higher stars are crafted at the Yu-Hwan NPC, and every step has the same 40 percent success rate, which cannot be increased. The recipes:
  • 2 star: 2x 1 star catalyst, 2 Gaya, 200,000 Yang.
  • 3 star: 2x 2 star catalyst, 4 Gaya, 400,000 Yang.
  • 4 star: 2x 3 star catalyst, 6 Gaya, 600,000 Yang.
  • 5 star: 2x 4 star catalyst, 10 Gaya, 1,000,000 Yang.
That is an expensive ladder. A single 5 star catalyst costs 16 one-star catalysts before you count the Gaya and Yang, and every step along the way can fail at 40 percent.

Using one

The option to add a catalyst appears at the bottom left of the crafting window. Drag the catalyst into that slot and the success chance shown for the craft goes up by the catalyst's bonus. Nothing else about the craft changes.

Common questions
  • Do catalysts stack? The wiki describes one catalyst slot in the crafting window. It does not describe adding more than one.
  • Do catalysts work on guaranteed crafts? No. They only matter where success is not guaranteed.
  • Does the bonus multiply? No. It is a flat percentage added to the base chance.
  • What happens if the craft fails? The wiki does not state the failure penalty for a catalyst craft. Check the page for the specific NPC before you commit materials.
  • Are catalysts tradeable? The 1 star page marks them as tradeable through the NPC trade window and not dropable, storable or stackable. The higher stars use the same item family.
  • When were catalysts added? Version 22.4, according to the item refinement page.
