Metin2 epic items: what the upgrade past +9 actually costs
Quick Summary
  • An epic item is the result of upgrading an item past its maximum normal grade of +9. It is a different item, not a bigger number on the same one.
  • Several NPCs handle epic upgrades and each has a specialty. Not every upgrade is guaranteed.
  • Catalysts, added in version 22.4, raise the success chance for upgrades that can fail.
  • The Blacksmith and Seon-Pyeong upgrades are the safe ones, with 100 percent success, and they keep your inserted bonuses and spirit stones.
In Metin2, +9 is not the end of an item's life. Some items can be pushed past the maximum grade into an epic version, and the wiki treats that as an evolution of the base item rather than a continuation of the same upgrade path. What follows is what the Metin2 Wiki documents about who performs these upgrades and what they consume.

How epic upgrades differ from normal upgrading

Producing items in Metin2 uses Craft Items, which work like Upgrade Items but only create new items. Once an item has reached the maximum grade of +9, some items can be upgraded further, and the result is called an epic item. A Battle Sword, for example, has three epic levels. Several NPCs can attempt an epic upgrade, and each one specializes in particular item categories. The wiki notes that not all of these upgrades and crafts are guaranteed, and each table states whether success is certain.

Catalysts

For upgrades that are not guaranteed, Catalysts exist to improve the odds. They were introduced in version 22.4 and are split by item category, so the catalyst you need depends on what you are upgrading:
  • Belt Catalyst
  • Weapon Catalyst
  • Armour Catalyst
  • Miscellanea Catalyst
  • Accessory Catalyst
  • Skill Book Catalyst
  • Set Weapon Catalyst
If a table does not mark an upgrade as guaranteed, check whether a matching catalyst exists before you start burning materials.

The two guaranteed upgrade NPCs

The Blacksmith and Seon-Pyeong handle armour and weapon upgrades, and their upgrades are the ones you can plan around. The success chance is always 100 percent, and inserted bonuses and spirit stones are kept through the process, which matters if you have already paid to socket stones into the item.

The Blacksmith stands in each first town, plus Cape Dragon Fire and Dong Gwang Plain. Seon-Pyeong is in the Valley of Seungryong, and the Kyanite set can only be upgraded by Seon-Pyeong. That exclusivity is why the Kyanite recipes look more expensive than the earlier tiers.

What the recipes cost

The level 66 to 70 armour upgrade takes any of Black Steel Armour, Magic Plate Armour, Black Wind Suit, Black Clothing, or Nightshade Armour at +9 and turns it into the corresponding armour from the next set at +0. The materials are 4 Dragon Claw, 3 Dragon Scales, and 200,000 Yang.

The level 110 to 120 armour upgrade is the step into Kyanite. It takes any of Aurora Armour, Magma Glow Armour, Whalebone Armour, or Fallout Armour at +9, plus 3 Book of Truth, 2 Soul of Truth, 2 Blessing Scroll, and 2,000,000 Yang, and produces Kyanite Armour at +0. Compare that with the earlier tier and the difference is not the Yang, it is the Book of Truth and Soul of Truth you have to farm first.

Who else upgrades and crafts items

The refinement page covers a lot more than armour. The NPCs documented there include:
  • Admiral Angmur, for armour upgrades
  • Jae-Seon Kim, for armour, weapon, jewellery, and belt crafting
  • Kawuco, for armour and shoes crafting
  • Dragon Watcher Jaharr, for helmet crafting
  • Master Chi, for armour, weapon, jewellery, belt, glove, and spirit stone crafting
  • Mysterious Altar, for talisman crafting
  • Serpent Statue, for armour, weapon, and upgrade material crafting
  • Warrior Statue, for shield, pet, and shard crafting
  • Illusion Statue, for Redux Stones
  • The Plateau of Illusions statues, for armour, helmet, and weapon crafting
  • Guild Land leathersmith, for leather crafting
What to check before you commit

1. Confirm whether the upgrade is guaranteed. If the table does not say so, assume it can fail and look for the catalyst that matches the item category.
2. Count the materials, not just the Yang. The Kyanite step wants Book of Truth and Soul of Truth, and those are the real cost.
3. Check whether your bonuses and spirit stones survive. The Blacksmith and Seon-Pyeong upgrades keep them, and the page does not promise that everywhere.
4. Budget for the item you get, not for a higher number. The result is a new +0 item from the next tier, so its base stats change along with its name.
