Metin2 rank system: the nine tiers, how to gain and lose rank, and what negative rank costs
Quick summary

Metin2 tracks a rank score for every character on a scale from -20,000 to 20,000, split into nine named tiers. Positive rank raises your item drop rate. Negative rank raises your damage but makes you drop items when you die. You can see your own points by hovering over your name in the character window.[3]

The nine tiers
  • Chivalric: 12,000 to 20,000
  • Noble: 8,000 to 11,999
  • Good: 4,000 to 7,999
  • Friendly: 1,000 to 3,999
  • Neutral: 0 to 999
  • Aggressive: -1 to -3,999
  • Fraudulent: -4,000 to -7,999
  • Malicious: -8,000 to -11,999
  • Cruel: -12,000 to -20,000
How you gain positive rank

Three methods:[3]

1. Killing monsters within your level range, meaning within 9 levels of you. Monsters at your level or higher give more rank than lower ones.
2. Staying online outside a safe zone. While your rank is positive or neutral you get one rank point every two minutes.
3. Consuming rank-increasing items. A Fruit of Life gives 2,000 points.[3]

What positive rank is worth

The main benefit is drop rate:[3]
  • Chivalric: 5 percent
  • Noble: 3 percent
  • Good: 2 percent
  • Friendly: 1 percent
Positive rank also raises the success chance when reading a Skill Book or Soul Stone.[3]

How you lose rank

Three methods, and all of them cost the same or a divided amount:[3]

1. Attacking players from your own kingdom while your PvP setting is Free. The loss is not guaranteed, but when it happens you lose 2,000 points.
2. Being in a group with someone who kills a player from your kingdom. Again not guaranteed, and you lose 2,000 points divided by the number of players in the group.
3. Reading a Soul Stone, Soul Stone+, or Talent Potion. If you read one while your rank is already negative, you lose double what you would have lost at positive rank.[3]

Getting back to neutral
  • Stand outside a safe zone: 6 rank points per minute. A Sage King's Symbol doubles it.
  • Fight monsters. A Sage King's Glove doubles it.
  • Eat a Zen Bean: 500 points. It cannot be used if you already have positive rank.
The Zodiac Temple is worth knowing about here. It has no safe zones, so you get the standing rank gain, but you cannot die fighting there, which makes it the standard place to leave a character running.[3]

You can also attack negative-rank players inside your own kingdom with your PvP mode set to Hostile, and you will not lose rank yourself.[3]

What negative rank costs you

The offset is damage. You can add the bonus "Damage is increased at lower rank points" to a weapon or helmet, and it scales from 1 to 5 percent depending on how negative you are.[3]

The real cost is on death. A player level 50 or above with negative rank can drop both inventory and equipped items when killed:[3]
  • Aggressive: 20 percent chance for 1 to 5 inventory items, 5 percent for 1 equipped item
  • Fraudulent: 40 percent for 1 to 10 inventory items, 10 percent for 2 equipped items
  • Malicious: 60 percent for 1 to 20 inventory items, 30 percent for 3 equipped items
  • Cruel: 80 percent for 1 to 40 inventory items, 40 percent for 4 equipped items
Two items that interact with negative rank

A Cloak of Secrecy makes your rank display as neutral. It only changes the display, and you can still drop items if you die while wearing it.[3]

Lucy's Ring is the defensive option. If a negative-rank player dies with one equipped, only the Lucy's Ring can drop, and only by chance.[3]
