Metin2 dyes: the upgrade materials, the hair dyes, the every-3-levels rule, and where they come from

Dyes in Metin2 are two different things that share a name, and the wiki treats them separately. One group is a crafting and refinement material. The other is a cosmetic that changes your hair colour. Both are tradeable, so the market treats them like any other item.

Dyes as refinement materials

The Metin2 Wiki lists several dyes under its Upgrade Items category. What each one does:
  • Grey Dye. The wiki gives it no description, but it upgrades every level 105 to 115 armour to +1 through +6, and Fire Shoes and Oceanic Shoes to +1 through +6.
  • Special Dye. Described as "a material used for refinement." It crafts the Ordinary Aura Outfit through Baek-Go and upgrades every level 96 armour, weapon, and helmet to +14 and +15.
  • Improved Dye. Also "a material used for refinement." It upgrades every level 96 armour, weapon, and helmet to +12 and +13.
The wiki also lists Regular Dye, Black Dye, Metallic Gold Dye, Red Dye, White Dye, and Blue Dye as separate items.

Where the dyes come from

Grey Dye comes from monsters and chests. The wiki names the En-Tai monsters (Destroyer, Druid, Healer) and the Ochao monsters (Bodyguard, Executioner, General, Lord, Soldier), plus Balathor's Frost Chest, Balathor's Frost Chest+, the Forest Reward Chest, and Razador's Chest.

Special Dye and Improved Dye come from boxes. The wiki lists Beran-Setaou's Chest (RX), Jotun Thrym's Chest (RX), Nemere's Chest (RX), and Razador's Chest (RX) for both.

Hair dyes

Hair dyes are a separate item group. The wiki's White Hair Dye page says it "dyes your hair white" and that "you can dye your hair once every 3 levels." The same every-three-levels rule appears on the Blonde, Red, Brown, and Black hair dye pages.

Two things remove the effect: using Bleach, or equipping a hair style. White Hair Dye's origin is listed as Fishing, so it is a catch rather than a drop.

Trading and storage

The wiki marks Grey Dye, Special Dye, and Improved Dye as tradeable, dropable, storable, and stackable, and the trade flags cover the NPC, the trade window, the private shop, and the mailbox. A dye you do not need can be sold or mailed instead of kept.
